MICHEL 529 to 539
DEUTSCHE LUFTPOST
(AIRMAIL)
Issued: 21st Jan 1934. These stamps were issued on the 21st of Jan 1934 and were valid through 31st Dec 1939. The stamp design is interesting in that the lower denominations, which were primarily for domestic use, feature the Nazi swastika rising like the sun over the earth. The German eagle soars gracefully in the foreground and overall, the impression is of a resurgent Germany looking forward to a bright future. As the Nazi party had only been in power for a year the two higher denominations, which would be primarily used on international mail, are more toned down and less overtly political.

END OF THE SAAR PROTECTORATE
On the 26th of Aug 1934 these two stamps were issued to mark the Saar Plebiscite, a vote that was to be held in Jan 1935 which would determine the future of the Saar region. The vote was intended for the people of the region to determine if they should be returned to Germany or to France. Over 90% voters opted for reunification with Germany, with 9% voting for the status quo as a League of Nations mandate territory and less than 0.5% opting for unification with France.
The stamps were valid for use until 31st Dec 1935. The 6Rpf stamp is a reference to the Saar region's main coal mining industry whereas the 12Rpf stamp is meant to show the Saar region as a part of a new aspiring Germany.

The series starts off with what might be referred to as more menial jobs, like a trader and blacksmith, then moves on to more specialised jobs like researcher, until it culminates with a Judge. What is interesting is that none of the stamps feature a female, a sign of the times when most men worked, and the women stayed at home.
