MICHEL 538
DEUTSCHE LUFTPOST
(AIRMAIL)
BACKGROUND: The stamp design is interesting in that the lower denominations, which were primarily for domestic use, feature the Nazi swastika rising like the sun over the earth. The German eagle soars gracefully in the foreground and overall, the impression is of a resurgent Germany looking forward to a bright future. As the Nazi party had only been in power for a year the two higher denominations, which would be primarily used on international mail, are more toned down and less overtly political.
