line BACKGROUND: When the German Wehrmacht launched its campaign against the Western nations on 10th May 1940 Luxemburg was the first of the low countries to fall, almost without any resistance. Luxemburg was placed under military control from the end of the invasion until the end of Jul 1940 when the armistice with France was signed, and a civilian administration took over.

Existing stamps, although officially only valid until 30th Sep 1940, were tolerated until 2nd Oct 1940. Therefore mixed franking examples using existing stamps and Hindenburg Medallion stamps are possible. From 1st Apr 1941 stamps from Germany, Alsace and Lorraine were valid for use in Luxemburg, and after 15th Jul 1941 Michel 1 to 16 stamps overprinted Luxemburg were valid for use in Germany, Alsace and Lorraine.

Stamps overprinted 'Luxemburg' were not permitted for use on Official mail.
