MICHEL 641
WINTERHILFSWERK
(WINTER RELIEF)
12Rpf + 15Rpf
BACKGROUND: As in previous years a set of 9 stamps was issued at the end of 1936 to raise money for the Winter Relief Fund. The stamps feature various modern buildings and were designed by Fritz.
This penultimate stamp in the series features the 319 meter-long Mangfall Autobahn Bridge, part of the MUNICH-SALZBURG Autobahn featured on the first stamp Michel 634. The original bridge was designed by German Bestelmeyer and construction began in Mar 1934 with the completion on 6th Jan 1936. During the Second World War the German Army destroyed the bridge as part of their delaying tactics to halt the advancing Allies. However a temporary bridge was built in 1948 and a permanent structure designed by Gerd Lohmer and Ulrich Finsterwalder was built from 1958-1960.
