MICHEL 634
WINTERHILFSWERK
(WINTER RELIEF)
3Rpf + 2Rpf
BACKGROUND: As in previous years a set of 9 stamps was issued at the end of 1936 to raise money for the Winter Relief Fund. The stamps feature various modern buildings and were designed by Fritz.
This first stamp features the Munich-Salzburg Autobahn. The initial plans for the autobahn were drawn up during the Weimar era and despite initial Nazi rejection of their construction (luxury roads for the rich) they eventually realised that the project would help to reduce soaring unemployment and so began construction of a number of autobahn. This stretch of Autobahn was not the first, Frankfurt-Am - Darmstadt - Mannheim being opened earlier in 1936 and Cologne-Bonn in 1932.
Another stamp in this series Michel 641 features the Mangfall Bridge which is part of the MUNICH-SALZBURG Autobahn.
