MICHEL 636
WINTERHILFSWERK
(WINTER RELIEF)
5Rpf + 3Rpf

BACKGROUND: As in previous years a set of 9 stamps was issued at the end of 1936 to raise money for the Winter Relief Fund. The stamps feature various modern buildings and were designed by Fritz.

The third stamp in the series is entitled 'Luitpoldhain' and depicts the Hall of Honour in Nürnberg. The Luitpoldhain is a 21-hectare district park in the south-east of Nurnberg and was the sight of the Second and third Nazi Party Rallies in 1927 and 1929. The Hall of Honour was not built by the Nazi's instead it was completed in 1930 to commemorate the 9,000 Nürnberg soldiers who died in the city in the First World War.

During the early Nazi Party Rallies the area still featured ad-hoc structures and wooden stands, but in 1933 the area was re-purposed and renamed the Luitpold Arena, now with more permanent structures. The Hall of Honour also took on a new mantra as a memorial to the Nazi's who died during the failed 8th Nov 1923 Munich putsch. Today all buildings related to the Nazi era have been removed.
