BACKGROUND: As in previous years a set of 9 stamps was issued at the end of 1936 to raise money for the Winter Relief Fund.
This second stamp in this series features the Air Transport Ministry building in Berlin. Construction began in Feb 1935 and the entire building was completed 18 months later in Aug 1936. Designed by Ernst Sagebiel it was once the largest office building in Europe and now houses the German Finance Ministry.
The building has seven storeys, a total floor area of 112,000 sq metres, 2,800 rooms, 7 kilometres of corridors and over 4,000 windows. The building not only housed the Air Transport Ministry but was also home to Goering's Luftwaffe and a total of 4,000 people worked there.
