PRIVATE POSTCARDS
JAHRESSCHAU 1938 "SACHSEN AM WERK"
SAXONY at WORK
(10th Jun 1938)
BACKGROUND: As well as the two Official postcards P269 and P270 shown above, there were at least seven private issue postcards that also commemorate the Saxony At Work Exhibition.
DRESDEN SONDERSCHAU
The following two postcards are identical and they both feature the special cancel used to promote the show. The card on the left was cancelled on 24th Jul 1938 and the one on the right on 12th Aug 1938. The inscription on the front of the card reads "DRESDEN | SONDERSCHAU | Die Sachsische Briefmarke | im Rahmen der Jahresschau | 1938 | SACHSEN AM WERK" - 'DRESDEN SPECIAL SHOW. The Saxon stamp as part of the annual show 1938. SAXONY AT WORK'The image depicts the Wettin Obelisk, an obelisk- like monument built to celebrate the 800-year rule of the House of Wettin over Saxony. The obelisk was located on Sophienstrasse, at the corner of Taschenberg, in the old town of Dresden, close to the Hauptwache. The obelisk was dismantled in 1942 and donated as part of the German people's metal donation campaign to the Führer.
Also depicted on the card is a postal delivery coach and horses as well as a 3pf old Saxony stamp.

In addition to the private postcards shown above there was also a set of at least 5 postcards depicting scenes from around Dresden, from an unknown local publisher. The cards are not numbered and so are shown below in no particular order.
ZWINGERHOF
The first card has an image of the ZWINGERHOF, a building complex and gardens in Dresden. The name 'Zwinger' goes back to the common name in the Middle Ages for a part of the fortress between the outer and inner fortress walls although it did not serve that purpose when it was constructed. The Zwinger was built in 1709 as an orangery and garden as well as a representative festival area. Its richly decorated pavilions and the galleries lined with balustrades, figures and vases bear witness to the splendor during the reign of Elector Friedrich August I

BLICK UND DIE ALTSTADT
VIEW OF THE OLD TOWN
This second postcard depicts a view of the old town of Dresden. The Dresden Frauenkirche can be seen on the left side of the tree, followed by Dresden Castle and Brühl's Terrace.

PALAIS IM GROβEN GARTEN
PALACE IN THE LARGE GARDEN
The third postcard depicts the Dresdner Residenzschloss or Dresdner Schloss (Dresden Castle or Royal Palace) and greater gardens. At 400 years old the Castle is one of the oldest buildings in Dresden, and was the home at various times of the Kings of Saxony and Poland.

STALLHOF, TURNIERSPIELE
STALLYARD, TOURNAMENT GAMES
The fourth card shows a scene from the Tournament Games held in the Dresden Stable Yard. Completed in 1591 under Elector Christian I, it served as a venue for tournaments, hunts and wrestling competitions. The stables were severely damaged during Allied bombing raids during the Second World War but have been reconstructed since. You can find out more here

ALTSTÄDTET UFER
OLD TOWN, SHORE
The fifth (and final?) card shows a scene from the Dresden Old Town Embankment.

THE ZWINGER
Below is another private postcard, this one depicting an image of the Zwinger in DRESDEN. This example has a rare sonderstempel cancelled in ROTHENFELDE ü. VORSFELDE on 26th May 1938 which commemorates the laying of the foundation stone of the Volkswagen factory.

PRINTED-TO-PRIVATE-ORDER
NO PRE-PRINTED STAMP
This postcard is based on Official postcard P270 above but it has less lines of text and no pre-printed stamp.

COMMEMORATIVE POSTCARD
This postcard was also published to commemorate the exhibition and can be found with different self-adhesive stamps.

DUPLICATE POSTCARDS FROM MY COLLECTION
FAVOUR CANCELS
This card has a curious red cancellation dated 22nd Sep 1938, over the self-adhesive 3Rpf Hindenburg Medallion stamp. The cancellation is from the small village of Filipówka (Philippsdorf), a village in Northern Poland.

FOREIGN USAGE
This foreign used card was sent to OSLO, NORWAY from DRESDEN on 22nd May 1938
