TAG DER BRIEFMARKE - FRANKFURT
PP122-C-69 and PP142-C-23
(9th Jan 1938)
BACKGROUND: Here is another postcard issued to celebrate 'The Day of the Stamp', again it was a double commemoration, 'The Day of the Stamp' and 'The Exhibition of The Hindenburg, LZ129', which crashed on 6th May 1937 in Lakehurst, New Jersey. The sponsor of the card was the Greater Frankfurt Stamp Collectors and Trade Society. Two versions of the card were available, PP122-C-69 with a 3Rpf Hindenburg Medallion stamp, and PP142-C-23 with a 5Rpf Luftpost stamp.
The image on both cards is that of the LZ129 crashing down in flames with a phoenix rising up from the shattered airship. This symbolises that the Zeppelins will live on and continue flying, despite the horrific accident and loss of life.
SONDERSTEMPEL: A special cancel, inscribed 'FRANKFURT (MAIN) | STADT DES DEUTSCHEN HANDWERKS | Werbe-Ausstellung | zum Tag der Briefmarke 1938' was also available only on the 8th and 9th Jan 1938 and featured a postillion blowing his horn.
