BACKGROUND: There were three postcards issued to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Gau East Prussia held in Königsberg from 16th to 19th Jun 1938.
SPECIAL CANCEL: There was a special cancel inscribed "KÖNIGSBERG | 10 Jahre Gau Ostpreussen".

The positioning of the pre-printed 6Rpf stamp is unusual on this card and appears to have been so positioned so as to leave space to the right for an additional stamp, perhaps to cover the extra cost of posting to an overseas destination.

GAULEITER ERICH KOCH
6Rpf HINDENBURG MEDALLION
Erich Koch was the Gauleiter of the NSDAP in East Prussia from 1st Oct 1928 until the end of the war in May 1945. He held various other positions such as Reichkommisar for the Ukraine (Sep 1941 until Aug 1944) and Reichskommisar Ostland (Sep 1944 to Apr 1945). Found guilty of war crimes in Poland after the war, he was initially sentenced to death, but his sentence was later reduced to life in prison. He died in Barczewo Prison, Poland, on 12th Nov 1986.
