OFFICIAL POSTCARD
5th ANNIVERSARY of POWER

VALIDITY: 28th Jan 1938 until 31st Dec 1939, although examples of this card can be found with a cancellation date of 27th Jan 1938.

BACKGROUND: Issued on 28th Jan 1938. This postcard was issued to commemorate the 5th Anniversary of the Nazi Party being in Government (Hitler became Chancellor on 30th Jan 1933). As a symbol of the victory of the National Socialist movement, the stamp image shows a young German carrying the light of truth and the laurel of honor through the Brandenburg Gate into the capital of the Reich. Proceeds from the surcharge went to the Reich's Culture Fund.

SPECIAL CANCEL: A special cancellation inscribed "Zum 30. Januar" was used in seven towns and cities

As well as the official card there were several official cards with additional private printing.

There were seven cities that used special handstamps with a "Zum 30. Januar" inscription. These cities include: BERLIN, FRANKFURT (MAIN), HAMBURG, LEIPZIG, MÜNCHEN, NÜRNBERG and STUTTGART.

DOMESTIC LONG DISTANCE WITHOUT SPECIAL MARKINGS

1. The following domestically used postcard has a violet rectangular stamp inscribed "NSDAP | hitler=Jugend | Gefolgschaft 4/190 | Oldendorf Kr. Stade" and was sent from HIMMELPFORTEN to STADE.

FOREIGN USE WITH 10 Rpf to CSR

1. The next foreign used card was sent from BERLIN to GRASLITZ (now Kraslice in the Czech Republic) on 30th Jan 1938 (The 5th anniversary of Hitler's appointment as Chancellor in 1933). This example features one of the special handstamps used to commemorate that event.

BELGIUM

1. This foreign used card was sent from CHEMNITZ to a town in BELGIUM on 10th Nov 1938. To cover the international postal rate two additional self-adhesive stamps have been added for a total of 15 Rpf.

DUTCH EAST INDIES

1. This example of a foreign destination is a P267 card sent from KASSEL on 30th Jan 1938 to SUMATRA in the Dutch Indies (now Indonesia). The card was over franked by the addition of the other commemorative stamp issued to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of the Nazi's rise to power on 30th Jan 1933.

1. The following example was posted in LAMBRECHT on 19th Mar 1938 and was sent to an address in FRANCE.

YUGOSLAVIA

1. The P267 card below was posted in DRESDEN on 23rd Apr 1938 and was sent to JELSA in Yugoslavia (now Croatia). A 5 Rpf Airmail stamp and four 1 Rpf Hindenburg Medallion stamps have been added to cover the extra overseas postage.

UNITED STATES of AMERICA

1. This foreign used card was posted on 21st Apr 1938 and destined for Atlanta, Georgia, USA. In order to cover the additional postage two self-adhesive stamps have been added for a total of 15 Rpf.

2. The following foreign used card was sent from OTTERSBURG to NEW JERSEY, U.S.A on 30th Jan 1938. To cover the additional postage the other commemorative stamp from the set has been used, tying together both commemorative stamps as well as the postcard.

3. The following card was another to the U.S.A, this time sent from ZEITZ on 30th Jan 1938 to DETROIT.

4. The P267 card below is another featuring the special handstamp used in BERLIN on a card sent to the US. Cancelled on 30th Jan 1938 and destined for someone living in New York City, this card also features a Michel 661 stamp, the other stamp related to this issue.
