STAMP EXHIBITION - 105th ANNIVERSARY of STEPHAN
PP122-C-18
(5th Jan 1936)
BACKGROUND: This postcard has the same design as PP122-C-20/01, only now with an extra red rubber stamp on the upper left-hand side on the reverse of the card. The stamp is inscribed "Briefmarken-Ausstellung | 105 Jahre Stephan | B.S.V Pankow | 5 Januar 1936".
The card was issued to commemorate the 105th Anniversary of Ernst Heinrich Wilhelm von Stephan the German general post director who reorganized the German postal service. He was integral in the founding of the Universal Postal Union in 1874, and in 1877 introduced the telephone to Germany. Although von Stephan was born on 7th Jan 1831 the commemorative stamp indicates the 5th Jan, possibly so as not to clash with the Day of the Stamp on the 7th Jan.
SPECIAL CANCEL: There was a special cancel related to this event and it is inscripbed "BERLIN-PANKOW | Postwert-Ausstellung | 105 Jahre Stephan", which can be seen on the example below.
The red rectangular stamp describes the event as a stamp exhibition "Briefmarken Ausstellung" whereas the circular handstamp calls it a postal exhibition "Postwert Ausstellung".
