OFFICIAL POSTCARD
HINDENBURG MEMORIAL ISSUE
BACKGROUND: Two postcards were issued in 1934 to commemorate the death of Paul von Hindenburg. The first has a 5Rpf pre-printed stamp (P234) and the second has a darker 6Rpf stamp (P235). P234 exists in two variants: P234a is on light to cream-coloured card and P234b is on darker card.

Destination address "Herrn | Kurt Horn | Dresden-Bad-Weiβer hirsch | Danziger Straβe 20 | Ruf 37651". This postally used example was cancelled in CHEMNITZ on 22nd Oct 1935. The special slogan reas "Kauft | WOHLFAHRTS= | BRIEFMARKEN | fur die | WINTERHILFE!" - 'Buy | WELFARE STAMPS | for | WINTER AID!'. The card also has a purple "Nachgebühr" or 'Additional Fee' stamp and a large blue "2", the additional fee of 2 Rpf was applied since the card should have been posted with 6 Rpf, not 5 Rpf, and a penalty fee of 1.5 times the missing postage was due. Since there was no 0.5 Rpf stamp the penalty has been rounded up to 2 Rpf.DEUTSCHE ROTE KREUZ | GERA
