BACKGROUND: The fifth of the eight stamps shows an athlete running one of the relay races. There were 3 relay races at the games: Men's 4x100m, 4x400m and women's 4x100m.
Mens 4x100m relay: 7 nations competed in the 4x100m (The Netherlands was disqualified) and the US won the gold medal in a time of 39.8 seconds, followed by Italy in silver in 41.1 seconds. Germany came a close third winning the bronze in 41.2 seconds.
Men's 4x400m relay: 6 nations entered the 4x400 men's competition with Great Britain winning gold in 3 minutes and 9 seconds. The US came second, two seconds behind the British, and Germany won the bronze just 0.8 seconds later.
Women's 4x100m relay: six teams entered the race (Germany was disqualified) which was won by the US in a time of 46.9 seconds. Great Britain won silver in a time of 47.6 seconds and Canada came a close third with a time of 47.8 seconds.
