BACKGROUND: The fourth stamp in the series depicts a man throwing a javelin. There were 17 competitors in the men's competiton and Germany's Gerhard Stöck won the gold medal with a throw of 71.84 metres, followed by two Finns, Yrjo Jouko Nikkanen and Kaarlo Kalervo Toieonen in Silver and Bronze positions respectively. Germany's Gottfried Weimann placed 9th and Friedrich Gerdes 17th.

In the women's competition there were 14 competitors and Germany finished in first and second places with Mathilde (Tilly) Fleischer in gold (45.18m) and Luise Krüger in silver place (43.29m). Marja Jadwiga Kwasniewska-Maleszewska won the bronze (41.8m) for Poland. Germany also finished 6th with Lydia Eberhardt (41.37m).
