BACKGROUND: Michel 611 was the third stamp in the series and it celebrates the sport of football, an amateurs only event since the augration of the FIFA World Cup in 1930. Italy won the gold medal for the first time, Austria was second and Norway took the bronze. Germany tied for fifth place with Great Britain and Japan, with Poland finishing above the trio in 4th place. A total of 16 matches were played with 78 goals being scored (4.88 per match). The total attendance for all 16 games was 507,469 (31,717 per match).

The Germans won their opening game on 4th Aug by thrashing Luxembourg 9-0 in the Berlin Poststadion, with Urban and Simetsreiter both scoring hatricks. It was a different story in the quarter finals on 7th Aug with Germany losing 2-0 to Norway, again in the Berlin Poststadion, in front of a crowd of 55,000 fans.
