MICHEL 609 and 624
11th OLYMPIC SUMMER GAMES
BERLIN
3Rpf + 2Rpf

BACKGROUND: The first stamp in this eight stamp series honours the men's artistic horizontal bar event as part of the gymnastics competitions. There was disappointment for the Germans as they finished in silver and bronze positions with Konrad Frey and Karl-Alfred Schwarzmann respectively, with Finland's Aleksanteri Saarvala taking the gold. But it wasn't all bad for Frey who finished the games with three gold medals (Parallel Bars, Pomell Horse and Team All-around), the silver in the Horzontal bar and bronze in the Floor Exercise and individual all-around.

Konrad Frey is known as the most successful German male competitor at a single Olympic Games (6 in 1936). He was born in Bad Kreuznach on 24th Apr 1909 and died 24th May 1974. After the war he worked as a teacher. Karl-Alfred Schwarzmann won three gold and two bronze medals at the 1936 games and a silver in 1952. He also won the Knights Cross 1st and 2nd Class and the Luftwaffe Parachute Badge during the Second World War. Whilst taking part in a parachute raid on Moerdijk in the Netherlands on 10th May 1940 he was shot and suffered a lung injury.
