BACKGROUND: Three stamps were issued to promote interest in the upcoming 1936, 4th Winter Olympic Games to be held in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The stamps were designed by Max Eschle and they were the first Nazi era stamps to feature the designer’s name.

VARIATIONS
There are two variations of the swastika watermark as viewed from the back of the stamp. By far the most common is the type 'X' where the legs of the swastika point to the left. The much rarer type 'Y' has the swastika legs pointing to the right.
