BACKGROUND: This is the first of 4 stamps that was issued to commemorate the SAAR vote on 13th Jan 1935. These stamps were the only official self-adhesive stamps designed by a woman during the Third Reich period. Fraülien Emmy Glintzer designed these stamps, but she also designed another stamp, a pre-printed stamp used on the official WHW P254 series of postcards. The imagery is meant to represent the German Empire (mother) welcoming the Saarland (daughter) back into the arms of the German family.
