INTRODUCTION:
The study of the various postmarks and cancellations used in 1935 is a difficult one due to the limited information available. Fortunately, we have the BOCHMANN catalogue to assist in identifying most of them. Whilst the catalogue covers most special cancellations and is a required source for this area of study, the information provided is limited and does not put the various postmarks and cancellations into context. The Bochmann catalogue forms the basis of this page, but I have provided additional information where possible. My apologies now for any errors and the inevitable omissions.

HOME MAILBOX
(16th Feb 1935)

This special slogan cancel was used from 11th May 1929 and every year thereafter until 1938 in both MUNICH and NURNBERG. The inscription reads "HAUSBRIEFKÄSTEN | Im Erdgeschoss | beschleunigen die | Zustellung" - 'A HOME MAILBOX On the ground floor speeds up the delivery'.

DAS WUNDER DES LEBENS AUSSTELLUNG
THE WONDER OF LIFE EXHIBITION
(23rd Mar / 5th May 1935)

This special machine cancel exists with several variations, all from BERLIN and either the C2, N4 Charlottenburg or NW7 Charlottenburg post office. Counters 'dh', 'dn', 'dp', 'dq', 'v', 'w' or 'ag' can be found. In addition a Charlottenburg handstamp was also used.

VOLKSTAG DER INNEREN MISSION
PEOPLE'S DAY OF THE INNER MISSION
(5th to 15th Apr 1935)

This special slogan cancel was used to advertise the People's Day of the Inner Mission from 5th to 15th Apr 1935 and again between 11th and 14th Apr 1936 in the city of MANNHEIM. The Inner Mission is a German Evangelical movement established by Johann Hinrich Wichern in 1848.

INTERNATIONAL FILM CONGRESS
(25th Apr / 1st May 1935)

There is only one version of this special handstamp and it can be seen below. This handstamp was available throughout the duration of the congress from 25th Apr until 1st May 1935.

HANNOVER STAMP EXHIBITION
(11th/19th May 1935)

DERBY WEEK
(22nd/30th Jun 1935)

This sloagn cancel was used to commemorate Derby Week held in HAMBURG from 22nd to 30th Jun 1935. The inscription reads "Besucht die Deutsche | DERBY- | WOCHE | 22-30.Juni 1935 | hamburgs Volksfeat" - 'Visit German DERBY WEEK, June 22-30, 1935, Hamburg's folk festival'. This slogan was only used in 1935 and there are eight variants of this slogan cancel:

HITLER YOUTH JAMBOREE
(25th Jul 1935)

Hitler Youth jamborees were held at a number of venues, some of which also had special cancellations. One of the more common handstamps was used in KUHLEMÜHLE from 11th Jul until 5th Aug 1935 and inscribed "KUHLEMÜHLE über WITTSTOCK (DOSSE) | Deutschland Lager 1935".

A rarer handstamp was used in OFFENBURG from 28th Jul until 6th Aug 1935.



In addition, a roller cancel was used in HOCHLAND inscribed "SONDERPOSTAMT KÖNIGSDORF BAD TÖLZ | über" and "HOCHLAND | LAGER | 1936"

12th GREATER GERMAN BROADCAST EXHIBITION
(15th - 28th Aug 1935)

Only a single special handstamp was available at the 1935 12th Greater German Broadcast Exhibition held in BERLIN from 15th to 28th Aug 1935.

HANSAPOSTA POSTAL STATIONERY EXHIBITION
(12th/20th Oct 1935)

This was the only special handstamp used at the 1935 Hansaposta (Hanseatic Postal Stationery Exhibition) held from 12th to 20th Oct 1935 in HAMBURG. The image on the handstamp is the exhibition's 'mascot' Hans Hummel (real name Johann Wilhelm Bent), who can be seen carrying large buckets of water. It was widely used on postcards and covers

BERLIN-CHARLOTTENBURG
WINE FESTIVAL
(17th/26th Oct 1935)

REFERENCE: BOCHMANN: Heft Nr 25, Page 820, Nr 183.

This handstamp was used in 21 different towns and cities from 17th Oct to 26th Oct 1935. The inscription reads "Wein ist Volksgetränk | Fest der deutschen | Traube und des Weines | 19.-26. | Okt.1935" - 'Wine is a popular drink | Festival of the German | Grape and Wine | 19th-26th | Oct. 1935'. Three are three versions, Type 'A' as below, Type 'C' (Slogan on the left, CDS in the middle and a series of wavy lines on the right) and Type 'G' (CDS in the middle and a different slogan on either side).

SLOGAN CANCEL - CHEAP TELEGRAMS
(14th Dec 1935)

BOCHMANN: Heft Nr 25, Page: 818, Number: 165

The following example has a special handstamp informing the public that from the 14th Dec they can get a special rate when using telegrams. The handstamp is inscribed "Heimat grüße nach übersee durch verbilligte Telegramme 14.12.- 0.1" - 'Greetings from home and overseas by using cheap telegrams 14.12.- 6.1'. This slogan was used in 17 towns and cities from 14th Dec to 6th Jan in 1934 and every year thereafter up to and including 1939.

This slogan exists in two versions: either Type A with the city name on the right or Type B with the city name on the left.
