ARRIVAL of OLYMPIC TORCH

This postcard was published to commemorate the arrival of the Olympic torch at Heldenplatz in Vienna at 8pm on the 29th Jul 1936.

ARRIVAL of OLYMPIC TORCH #1

This first postcard was published by Werkstatt Albu of Berlin and bears the inscription:

Weg des OLYMPISCHEN FEUERS
Die Laufstrecke beträgt 3075 Km, welche sich wie folgt aufteilt: Griechenland 1108 Km. Bulgarien 238 km, Jugoslawien 575 km, Ungarn 386 km, Oesterreich 219 km, Tsechchoslowakei 282 km, Deutschland 267 km.

Am Montag, den 20 Juli 1936, mittags 12 Uhr wurde die Fackel vermittels eines Hihlspiegels durch die Sonne entzündet. um danach durch den Südosten Europas nach Berlin getragen zu werden, wo das heilige Feuer während der Olympischen Spiele über Kampfstatten lordert.

The running distance is 3075 km, which is divided as follows: Greece 1108 km, Bulgaria 238 km, Yugoslavia 575 km, Hungary 386 km, Austria 219 km, Czechoslovakia 282 km, Germany 267 km.

On Monday, July 20, 1936, at 12 noon, the torch was ignited by the sun by means of a mirror. to then be carried through south-eastern Europe to Berlin, where the sacred fire lords over battlegrounds during the Olympic Games.

The following postcard was published by FR.J.FASCHING of VIENNA and depicts the Olympic torch and the five interlocking rings. The inscription on the front reads:

OLYMPISCHER FACKELLAUF IN ÖSTERREICH WEI HESTUNDE WIEN HELDEN PLATZ 29.JULI 1936 20 UHR.

The reverse side of the card features the coats of arms of the nine Austrian provinces. Top to bottom, left to right:

1. Lower Austria
2. Styria
3. Salzburg
4. Tyrol
5. Vienna
6. Upper Austria
7. Carinthia
8. Voralberg
9. Burgenland

The example above also features an Austrian stamp cancelled with the special handstamp used to commemorate the games in VIENNA.

Finally there is another inscription between the coats of arms that translates as "Austrian Olympic Winner 1936", and the signature of Karl Schäfer. Schäfer was an Austrian figure skater who won gold at the 1932 and 1936 Winter Olympic Games.
