REICHS KRIEGERTAG
WARRIOR DAY
(1st/6th Jul 1936)
BACKGROUND: In the course of the Second World War , several air raids on Kassel destroyed large parts of the old town , which had been very important up to that point, and the other urban developments, and claimed many lives. The city experienced the heaviest attack on October 22, 1943. That night more than 10,000 people died and 80% of the houses were destroyed. Because Kassel, especially in the old town areas, was a city with many half-timbered houses, it became the perfect target for firebombing under the "Area Bombing Directive". The targeted mass dropping of phosphorus and incendiary bombs caused a fire storm such as that inDresden , Hamburg , Pforzheim , Würzburg or Darmstadt.
