BERLIN CHRISTMAS MARKET
(Dec 1936)
BACKGROUND: There are more than 80 Christmas markets held in Berlin every year and this postcard commemorates the one held at the Lustgarten (Pleasure Garden). The market was first held here in 1873 but moved to Arkonastrasse from 1891 until 1936. The market then moved back to the Lustgarten where it remained until then end of the war in 1945.
There were two different postcards published to commemorate the 1936 Berlin Christmas Market in the Lustgarten. The card shown below on the left was used again for Christmas 1937.
SPECIAL CANCEL: There was a special cancel available inscribed "BERLIN C2 | Berliner Weihnachtsmarkt 1936". This cancel was available from 6th until 22nd Dec 1936 and can be found with counters 'a', 'b' and 'c'. The example below was from counter 'a'.
