AVIATION SPORTS
(Oct 1936)
This postcard was published to generate an interest among the population to grow the country's aviation sector through sports. The card features a bi-plane 'D-EXIE' flying over the coast with several aircraft silhouettes on the ground below.
This particular example from my collection has a special cancel used in 1937 at the Model Airplane Competition held in Munich and is inscribed "SEGELFLUG-MODELL-WETTBEWERB | MUENCHEN 1937 | PASING" - 'GLIDING MODEL COMPETITION | MUNICH 1937 | PASING'.
Just below the image is the inscription "Durch Luftsport zur Fliegenden Nations" - 'Through air sports to the Flying Nations', a message stating German intentions to become equal to the countries that already had viable aircraft industries. Up to this point Germany had been forbidden by the Treaty of Versailles to have an airforce, but that was all about to change.
