700 ANNIVERSARY of JENA
(20th/25th Jun 1936)
BACKGROUND: Jena is the second largest city in the region of Thuringia, and is located close to the cities of Erfurt and Weimar. The city is well-known for the Freidrich Schiller University founded in 1558, as well as other education and research establishments. Jena is also an importnat location for the optics industry with companies such as Carl Zeiss and Schott having a major presence there. At the outbreak of the second world war the city had a population of 71,000. The notorious concentration camp Buchenwald was located in the city. During the war much of the older part of the city was destroyed by Allied bombing but many of the buildings have since been restored.
This postcard was published to commemorate the 700th Anniversary of the City.
