750th ANNIVERSARY of HAINICHEN
(20th Jun / 3rd Jul 1935)
BACKGROUND: This postcard commemorates the 750th Anniversary of the town of Hainichen (also known as Gellertstadt)
The portrait on the front of the card is most likely that of Christian Fürchtegott Gellert, a German poet and moral philosopher of the Enlightenment that was considered the most widely read German writer during his lifetime alongside Christian Felix Weiße.
The building is most likely the Altzella monastery (originally Cella or more precisely Cella Sanctae Mariae, Altenzelle, today Altzella).
The inscription on the reverse side reads:
750 years of Hainichen. Under Margrave Otto the Rich, Frankish settlers established numerous villages in the vicinity of the Altzella monastery, and the town of Hainichen was established around 1185 as their common center and market. SPECIAL HANDSTAMP
