5 Pf IMPERIAL EAGLE

BACKGROUND: Issued 1924. Stylised Adler, small postcard format 140 x 90 mm. Single line for the dividing line. Almost identical to P162 except for the dividing line on P162 is thicker and consists of a thick dark green line with light green on each side (3 lines).

There are two versions of this postcard as follows:

P156-I with four straight edges.
P156-II with one or more serrated edges.

In addition to the regular official card described above there were at least 120 private printings, some of which can be seen below.

This card was produced for a company with the destination address on 4 lines of text "Firma | Dr. M. Albersheim | Frankfurt a. M | Lützowstr. 15/17" and there is a printer's control code on the bottom left-hand edge. The reverse side is an order form for the company's products.

Dr. M. Albersheim was a Jewish family run business in Frankfurt that produced perfumes and cosmetics on par with the most famous brands in Paris. During the Nazi period the company was Aryanised and they were forced to sell the business in 1938. The company was founded by a chemmist, Moritz Albersheim in 1892 and succeeded in growing it's brand through extensive advertising. The perfume named 'Khasana' was one of their most popular products. The destination address on this card covers five lines of text "Firma | H. Goetz | Pharmazeutische Spezialitaten | Frankfurt a. Main | Schleusen-Strasse 17", from a pharmaceuticals company. There are four lines of text in the upper half of the sender's section that reads "Please send me a free tube of Bengue's balm, post free". The reverse side is an advertisement for Bengue's balm.

The advertisement instructs the user to rub the cream on the skin and cover it with cotton wool and a bandage. It claims the cream will cure Neuralgia, rheumatism, gout, migratory joint pain and headaches and was available in several types of packaging. There are two versions of this card.

The catalogue cost 7 Marks including postage, which could be paid either on delivery or into the company's personnal post check accout.

The Abraham Dürninger company was a textile company founded in 1747 by Abraham Dürninger in Herrnhut as Aktion Abraham Dürninger. In 1750 the name was chnaged to Abraham Dürninger & Co. The company still exists today and more of their history and products can be found here
