MICHEL 815
9. DAS BRAUNE BAND VON DEUTSCHLAND
9th BROWN RIBBON RACE
42Rpf + 108Rpf

BACKGROUND: This stamp was designed by Prof. Klein, printed at the State Printing Works in Vienna and issued on 14th Jul 1942 to celebrate the 9th Brown Ribbon Race. From 1934 the annual week-long Brown Ribbon horse racing event took place at Riem just outside Munich. It was a very popular social event even with the risk of Allied bombing. The race itself was for 3- and 4-year-old horses over 1.5 miles. The race started in the Nazi party's first year in power (1933), the name being derived from the brown uniform of the paramilitary wing (the Sturm Abteilung).
