WINTERHILFSWERK STAMPS
OVERPRINTED 'LUXEMBURG'
(12th Jan 1941)

BACKGROUND: This was one of nine German Empire Winterhilfswerk commemorative stamps overprinted 'LUXEMBURG'. In this case the base stamp is the 1940 issue Michel 751.

This stamp features Artus Court (after King Arthur) (formerly known as the Junkerhof or Artushof) located in the city of Danzig (GdaƄsk, modern day Poland). The building is located in the city centre and was formerly used by wealthy merchants as a meeting place. Construction began in 1348 and was completed by architect Abraham van den Blocke in 1350.

In 1945 the building was severly damaged by Soviet forces during the East Pomeranian Offensive, but has since been restored.
