INTEGRATION of STYRIA, CARINTHIA and CARNIOLA

BACKGROUND: Issued: 29th Sep 1941, designed by E. Meerwald and printed Photogravure by the State Printing Works in Vienna, this was the first of four stamps to commemorate the integration of Styria, Carinthia and Carniola into Greater Germany. This first stamp features Marburg (Maribor).
There were 4 special postmarks, one each from the towns of Marburg, Meistern, Pettau and Veldes.
Styria is located in the modern day region of Southern Austria and Northern Slovenia. Styria belonged to the Holy Roman Empire and then passed onto the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end of the First World War. Following armed conflict between rival ethnic groups, the 1919 Treaty of St Germain divided the region among Austria and Slovenia. The stamp mark the return of the unified region to Austria and Greater Germany.
