MICHEL 697
NÜRNBURG RACES
and HITLER'S CULTURE FUND
25Rpf + 10Rpf

BACKGROUND: The following Meerwald stamp is the third of three stamps re-issued on 18th May 1939 to commemorate both the Nürnburg Races and Hitler's Culture Fund. There was also a special postmark used alongside the stamp.

The design on the stamp shows a Volkwagen car, or 'people's car', a design based on a proposal by Adolf Hitler, to produce a car that would be affordable for every German. In the end only around 600 Volkswagens were manufactured and these ironically went to prominent politicians and the army, with none of them being made available to the common man.

See Also Michel 688 which is the same stamp but without the overprinted "Nürburgring=Rennen" - "Nürnburg Race"
