MICHEL 688
INTERNATIONAL AUTOMOBILE/MOTORCYCLE EXHIBITION
25Rpf + 10Rpf
BACKGROUND: The following Meerwald stamp is the third of three stamps issued on 17th Feb 1939 to commemorate the International Automobile and Motorcycle Show held in Berlin. There was also a special postmark used for the duration of the show, from 17th Feb 1939 until 5th Mar 1939.
The design on the stamp shows a Volkwagen car, or 'people's car', a design based on a proposal by Adolf Hitler, to produce a car that would be affordable for every German. In the end only around 600 Volkswagens were manufactured and these ironically went to prominent politicians and the army, with none of them being made available to the common man.
