TAG DER BRIEFMARKE
BRAUNSCHWEIG
(11th Jan 1942)
BACKGROUND: The following 'The Day of the Stamp' commemorative postcard was published to commemorate the event in BRAUNSCHWEIG (BRUNSWICK) on 11th Jan 1942.
On the top left-hand side is the logo of the K.d.F (Kraft durch Freude) organisation, and on the top right-hand side is the logo of th R.d.P (Reichsbund der Philatelisten). The silhouette in the background between them is an outline of the town of BRAUNSCHWEIG.
In the centre of the card is a 1942 issue Michel 811 stamp, the official Stamp issued for this year's event, which has been cancelled with the Special handstamp used in the city.
In large red text is the inscription "GEDENKBLATT ZUM TAG der BRIEFMARKE" - 'STAMP DAY COMMEMORATIVE SHEET'.
The figure on the bottom left-hand side is a postilon announcing the arrival of the mail and on the right the image of the lion represents the 'Braunschweiger Löwe' or Brunswick Lion, a medieval bronze sculpture and major landmark in the city. The lion was temporarily removed during the war for its own protection and was reinstated once hostilities had ended.
SPECIAL CANCEL: A generic special handstamp was used as part of the Day of the Stamp commemoration.
