BACKGROUND: This card was published to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the death of Peter Henlein on 6th Sep 1942
SPECIAL HANDSTAMP: BOCHMANN: Heft Nr. 16, Page: 597, Number: S 79. A single special handstamp was used only on the 6th Sep 1942 inscribed "NÜRNBERG | DIE STADT DER REICHSPARTEITAG | 6.9.1942 | 1542 | 1942 | PETER HENLEIN". There is also an image of the NÜRNBERG coat of Arms.
Peter Henlein (1485 - 1542) was a famous German locksmith and clockmaker, considered by many as the inventor of the clock and the first watch. Henlein was born in NÜRNBERG, and the city commemorates his legacy with a statue which stands in the Hefnerplatz and was designed by Max Meiβner in 1905.
