GEORG SLUYTERMAN VON LANGEWEYDE LINOCUTS
P46 SERIES

This series of cards was likely issued in 1940 [REQUIRES MORE RESEARCH]. In Oct 1940 the German Red Cross issued a series of six similar postcards also featuring images of linocuts designed by Georg Sluyterman von Langeweyde, for the purpose of raising funds for the German Red Cross.

The cards are unnumbered so I have numbered them myself for ease of reference. These cards all have the same vertical texts on the reverse side dividing the sender's and destination's sections:

In addition each card has a quote from a well-known German as well as the signature of Georg Sluyterman von Langeweyde below the image..

Card No. 1 - GERMAN SOLDIER ON THE LOOKOUT

Inscribed "Der dem Tode ins Angesicht schauen kann der Soldat allein ist der freie Mann" from Friedrich von Schiller. "The soldier who can look death in the face alone is a free man".

Card No. 2 - GRAVES UNDER A TREE

The inscription reads "Der tod für's Vaterland ist ewiger Verehrung werth." - 'Death for the Fatherland is worthy of eternal respect' - from a quote by Ewald Christian von Kleist.

Card No. 3 - SOLDIER WITH MACHINE GUN

The inscription on this card reads "Der Gott, der Eisen wachten lieβ, Der wollte keine knechte!" - 'The God who made iron grow didn't want any servants!' a line from the Fatherland Song (otherwise known as 'The God that made iron grow') a poem by E.M. Arndt in 1812.

Card No. 4 - SOLDIER ON HORSEBACK

The inscription reads "Im felde, da ist der Mann noch was wert, da wird das herz noch gewogen. Da tritt fein anderer fur ihm ein, auf sich selber steht er da ganz allein" - 'In the field, a man is still worth something, his heart is still weighed. Others stand up for him, but he stands alone on his own.' after a quote by FRIEDRICH von SCHILLER.
