FRANZ ZABEL VERLAG, DESSAU

The publisher Franz Zabel Verlag produced a series of colour photo cards celebrating the men and machines of the German Wehrmacht. Featured below is series 17, see also Series 14 and Series 7000.

SERIES 17

Series 17 consists of 10 cards numbered 142 to 151 and is titled "KAMPF IM LUFTRAUM FÜR EIN NEUES EUROPA" - 'FIGHTING IN THE AIRSPACE FOR A NEW EUROPE'.

No. 142
JUNKERS-F.M.

The text on the first card in the series reads "Einsatzbereit siehen die Kampfflugzeuge Junkers-Ju 88 an der front. Bevor der Feindflug beginnt, hören Flugzeugführer und Beobachter gespannt und kühl wägend den Klang der Motoren beim Abbremsen." - 'The Junkers Ju 88 fighter planes are ready for action at the front. Before the enemy flight begins, pilots and observers listen with anticipation and calmness to the sound of the engines braking.'

WAR REPORTER HORSTER

The second card reads "Wie die U-Boote einen Schirm riesenhaften Ausmaβes über den Atlantik gespannt haben, um Europas Westküste abzuschirmen, so hält unsere Luftwaffe treue Wacht im Westen vom Eismeer bis zum Mittelmeer. Ein Kampfflugzeug Junkers-Ju 88 befindet such auf dem Marsch über den Atlantik" - 'Just as the U-boats have stretched a gigantic umbrella across the Atlantic to shield Europe's west coast, so our Air Force keeps loyal watch in the West, from the Arctic Ocean to the Mediterranean. A Junkers Ju 88 fighter aircraft is currently on its way across the Atlantic.'

WAR REPORTER NIERMANN

The text on the following card reads "Gegen Schiffsziele und bei Flügen nach der englischen Insel finden die deutschen Stukas Junkers-Ju 87 besondere Verwendung. Eine Kette Junkers-Ju 87 hat einen Feindflug über den Kanal angetreten" - 'The German Junkers-Ju 87 Stukas are particularly useful against shipping targets and in flights to the Channel islands. A chain of Junkers-Ju 87s has begun an enemy flight over the Channel.'

WAR REPORTER KOLTZENBURG

Inscribed "Die Maschinen unserer Luftwaffe sind im hohen Norden genau so zuverlässig wie unter dem Wüstenhimmel Afrikas. Ein Junkers-Ju 87 Stuka wird erst aus dem Schnee der Polarkreislandschaft ausgeschaufelt, ehe der Angriffsflug beginnt" - 'Our Air Force's aircraft are just as reliable in the far north as they are under the desert skies of Africa. A Junkers Ju 87 Stuka is first dug out of the snow of the Arctic Circle landscape before its attack flight begins.'

WAR REPORTER REIMERS

The next card is inscribed "Wie im hohen Norden die tiefe Temperatur den Junkers-maschinen nichts anhaben konn, so ist es auch im strengen Winter des Ostens. Auf ihrem winlerlichen Flugplatz starten die deutschen Stukas Junkers-Ju 87 genau so sicher wie auf einem ausgebauten Sommerflugplatz." - 'Just as the low temperatures in the far north have no effect on Junkers aircraft, the same is true in the harsh winters of the East. From their winter airfield, the German Junkers-Ju 87 Stukas take off just as safely as from a well-developed summer airfield.'

WAR REPORTER GROSSE

The following card has the texts "Wohlgetarnt am Waldrand stehen die Junkers - Stukas Ju 87 auf ihrem sommerlichen Flugplatz am Dniepr. Alarm ist gegeben, und so werden die Maschinen in kürzester Frist stanklar gemacht zum Feindeinsatz gegen die Bolschewisten" - 'Well camouflaged at the edge of the forest, the Junkers Stukas Ju 87 stand at their summer airfield on the Dnieper. The alarm has been raised, and the aircraft are quickly made ready for enemy action against the Bolsheviks.'

Card No. 148 has the texts "Bei der Niederringung der Bolschewisten haben die deutschen Stukas Junkers-Ju 87 einen besonders hohen Anteil. Ein Stukageschwader Junkers-Ju 87 bei Orel befindel such einem Angriffsflug" - 'The German Junkers-Ju 87 Stukas played a particularly important role in defeating the Bolsheviks. A Junkers-Ju 87 Stuka squadron near Orel was on an attack mission'

The texts read "Die Transportstaffeln unserer Luftwaffe haben seit Kriegsbeginn ungeheure Mengen vielseitigen Frontdedarf durch die Luft geführt. Bei einer Junker-Ju 52 Transportstaffel am Schwarzen Meer sieht man, wie Bomben und Munition verladen werden" - 'Since the beginning of the war, our Air Force's transport squadrons have transported enormous quantities of diverse front-line supplies through the air. A Junkers Ju 52 transport squadron on the Black Sea shows bombs and ammunition being loaded.'

WAR REPORTER ILLERSPERGER

The penultimate card reads "Der Kampfraum über dem Mittelmeer ist zum besonderen Einsatzgebiet unserer Luftwaffe gewarden. Es gilt die Südflanke Europas zu sichern. Kampfflugzeuge Junkers-Ju 88 haben Ihren Feldflugplatz auf Sizilien aufgeschlagen mit dem Vulkan Ätna im Hintergrund" - 'The combat zone over the Mediterranean has become a special operational area for our Air Force. It is essential to secure Europe's southern flank. Junkers Ju 88 fighter jets have set up their airfield in Sicily with Mount Etna in the background.'

WAR REPORTER ILLERSPERGER

The final card has the following texts "Für den Einsatz unserer Luftwaffe in Afrika ist der Tarnanstrich unerläβlich. Von oben sehen die Junkers-Ju 88 auf ihren Wüstenflugplätzen aus als seien sie ein Stück Wüste. Eine Junkers-Ju 88 wird in der Wüste einer genauen Kontrolle unterworfen" - 'Camouflage is essential for our Air Force's deployment in Africa. From above, the Junkers Ju 88s at their desert airfields look like a piece of desert. A Junkers Ju 88 undergoes close inspection in the desert.'
