FRANZ ZABEL VERLAG, DESSAU

The publisher Franz Zabel Verlag produced a series of colour photo cards celebrating the men and machines of the German Wehrmacht. Featured below is series 14, see also Series 17 and Series 7000.

SERIES 14

Series 14 consists of 10 cards numbered 123 to 132 and is titled "UNSERE LUFTWAFFE IM MITTELMEERRAUM" - 'OUR AIR FORCE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN'.

The text reads "Junkers-Ju 88 Horizontal- und Sturzkampfflugzeug im Steigflug. Die Ju 88 hat, wie aus den Berichten des OKW. Hervorgeht, im Mittelmeerraum besonders gorssen Einsatz gefunden" - 'Junkers Ju 88 horizontal and dive-attack aircraft in climb. According to OKW reports, the Ju 88 was particularly widely used in the Mediterranean.'

The text on the reverse side reads "Eine Kampfgruppe von Junker-Ju 88 hat ihren Absprunghafen im Angesicht des Atna, Siziliens feuerspeiendem Berg, eingerichtet." - 'A combat group of Junkers Ju 88s has set up its drop zone in front of Mount Etna, Sicily's fire-breathing mountain.'

The following card is inscribed "Seltsame Begegnung auf Sizilien: ein zweiradriger Karren mit den buntgeschmuckten Pferden, wie er in Süditalien überall üblich ist, ein Kampfflugzeug Junkers-Ju 88." - 'Strange encounter in Sicily: a two-wheeled cart with the colorfully decorated horses, as is common everywhere in southern Italy, and a Junkers Ju 88 fighter plane.'

Inscribed "Unter heiβer Sonne: Junkers-Ju 88 Fernaufklärer sieht zu weiterem Einsatz bereit. Die Junkers-Ju 88 werden verwendet als Universalkampfflugzeug: Sturzkampfflugzeug, für Horizontalbombenwurt, Kampfflugzeug oder Fernaufklärer." - 'Under the hot sun: The Junkers Ju 88 long-range reconnaissance aircraft looks ready for further deployment. The Junkers Ju 88 is used as a universal combat aircraft: dive bomber, horizontal bomber, fighter, or long-range reconnaissance aircraft.'

The next card is inscribed "Eine Kette Junkers-Ju 87 - Stukas auf Feindflug. In der wegelosen Wüste Afrikas kann nur ein Sturzkampfflugzeug, das tief auf die feindlichen Stellungen herabstöβt, die Erdziele ausmachen" - 'A chain of Junkers Ju 87 Stukas on an enemy mission. In the trackless African desert, only a dive bomber, diving low over enemy positions, can locate ground targets.'

The penultimate card in the series reads "Der Motorenwechsel wird gleich auf dem FeldFlughafen vorgenommen, wie hier an Junkers-Ju 52 Transportflugzeugen auf Sizilien" - 'The engine change is carried out directly on the airport field, as here on Junkers-Ju 52 transport aircraft in Sicily'

The final card is inscribed "Unentbehrlich sind im Mittelmeerraum die Lufttransporter für den Nachschub durch die Luft. Sie ziehen schwerbeladen ihre Bahn über die weiten Wüsten Afrikas. Hier ist eine Kette Junkers-Ju 52 Lufttransporter auf dem Marsch" - 'Air transporters are indispensable for airborne supplies in the Mediterranean region. They traverse the vast deserts of Africa, heavily laden. Here, a line of Junkers Ju 52 air transporters is on the move.'
