GREAT BRITAIN

1. Posted in BERLIN-CHARLOTTENBURG on 3rd Dec 1938 this card was sent to LONDON, ENGLAND. The value of the stamps initially appears to be more than the required 15Rpf (21Rpf), but the pre-printed 6Rpf stamp had expired by this date, so a total of 15Rpf in self-adhesive stamps has been added to cover the full postal rate.

MEXICO

1. 15Rpf was also the postage required to send the following card all the way from STETTIN to MEXICO on 9th Dec 1932. If the sender was hoping it would arrive before Christmas he would have been disappointed as the arrival stamp on the reverse is dated 27th Dec 1932.

The message on the reverse side reads "Dear Mr Pohle, I have since learned that another provisional airmail stamp with decorative overprint has appeared, namely 40 by 35 cents carmine and brown. Perhaps you would be so kind as to send me this temporary airmail postage stamp that appeared there in a block of four, and also in a block of four on an envelope, with payment in the previous manner, - I am with the best regards, your very devoted, Dr Meyer"

DOMESTIC AIRMAIL

1. The following P215 postcard is a domestic airmail card from HOHENSTEIN to FELLBACH. The interesting thing about this card is that it was first cancelled in HOHENSTEIN on 27th Aug 1939 but was only delivered to FELLBACH on 9th Sep 1939. HOHENSTEIN (now known as Olsztyn) lies in modern day POLAND so most likely the delivery was delayed due to the German invasion on Poland on 1st Sep 1939.

Another interesting point is that the pre-printed stamp on this card was only valid until 30th Jun 1933 so was already 6 years past that date. The sender has added a 5 Rpf and a 3 Rpf stamp to cover the total cost of postage.

image image

4. The next usage was a domestic long-distance card which was sent from BERLIN-CHARLOTTENBURG to PILLNITZ, a suburb of DRESDEN located on the ELBE River on 22nd Dec 1932. The slogan cancel on this example is a very common one used to advise the public to add the house and street number to their mail.
