ALBERT LEO SCHLAGETER
(1934)

Although this card was cancelled in 1934 it was almost certainly printed well before that date. The subject of this card is Albert Leo Schlageter (12th Aug 1894 to 26th May 1923). Schlageter was a German First World War I soldier and a member of the Front Organisation Greater German Workers' Party (Part of the Nazi Party).

Schlageter was active in the Franco-Belgian occupied Ruhr region after the war, and was found guilty of several acts of espionage including bomb attacks against the occupying forces. He was captured by the French and found guility in a military court, after which he was executed.

During the Weimar and then the Nazi years he became something of a martyr being labelled "The First Soldier of the Third Reich". The card shown here features Schalgeter, his family home and memorial in Bad Schwarzwald.
