BACKGROUND: This E. Stahl designed stamp was issued on 22nd Jun 1940 to commemorate the 'Greater German Prize for Three Year Old's', a horse race that was part of the German Derby meeting held in HAMBURG. A special handstamp, available only in Hamburg on 23rd, 26th-28th and 30th Jun, and inscribed "Groβer Deutschlandpries der Dreijährigen", was available during the event. There are very few examples of this stamp with a city/date cancel, they are almost all found with the special handstamp.
