MICHEL 740
LEIPZIGER MESSE
LEIPZIG SPRING FAIR
6Rpf
BACKGROUND: This stamp was the second in a set of 4 issued on 3rd Mar 1940, designed by von Axster-HeĆ¼dtlass, to commemorate the 1940 annual Leipzig Spring Fair. The image is of The Augustusplatz or Augustus Square in Leipzig, at 40,000 square meters one of the largest city squares in Germany. The Leipzig fairs began in the 12th Century and were trade fairs that were used to develop the German economy. They soon developed into "Muster Messe" or 'Sample Fairs', hence the 'MM' initials on the stamps.
In addition to the stamp there were 6 special handstamps, and a slogan postmark, used to promote the fair.
