INTERNATIONAL LEIPZIG FAIR
(3rd Mar 1940)

BACKGROUND: This postcard was issued to commemorate the annual International Leipzig Fair in 1940. The card is inscribed "REICHSMESSESTADT LEIPZIG | INTERNATIONALE LEIPZIGER MESSE" - ' REICH EXHIBITION CITY LEIPZIG | INTERNATIONAL LEIPZIG FAIR'. The image on the front of the card is of "Das Völkerschlachtdenkmal", The Monument to The Battle of the Nations. This monument commemorates the defeaat of Napolean's Armies at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813. It was also the scene of fighting in World War II, when Nazi forces in Leipzig made their last stand against U.S. troops.

STAMPS: The example below also has the four special stamps issued in conjunction with the postcard. The stamps were designed by von Axster-Heüdtlass and R. Engelhardt (25Rpf) and are catalogued as Michel 739 to 742 and were issued on 3rd Mar 1940.

SONDERSTEMPEL: A commemorative special cancel was also available inscribed "LEIPZIG | REICHSMESSESTADT | PRESSE- | POSTAMT | HAUS DER | NATIONEN", which can be seen on the postcard below.
