HOUSE of GERMAN ART
BACKGROUND: The 'Great German Art Exhibition' was an annual art exhibition that ran from 1937 in the specially constructed "House of German Art" - "Haus Der Deutschen Kunst" in Munich and was one of the major cultural events staged by the Nazi's. Eligible artists were allowed to showcase as many as 10 pieces of work, which could be sold and replaced by alternative pieces.The "Great German Art Exhibition" showed a total of 12,550 exhibits and was visited by around 600,000 people. Art for 13 million Reichsmarks was sold; Hitler alone bought works for 6.8 million Reichsmarks. The international interest remained low. The following two postcards are identical except that one is published in colour and the other in black and white. The title of this particular artwork is "Beim Krämer" or 'At the Grocer", a work by Peter Philippi a German portrait and genre painter who lived from 30th Mar 1866 until 17th Aug 1945.
