GAU CULTURE WEEK - DANZIG
(Jun 1939)
BACKGROUND: This dramatic Verlag Th. König postcard was published to commemorate 'Gau Kultur Woche' (Gau Culture Week) in Danzig and bears the inscription "Danzig ist Deutsch" - 'Danzig is German'. The building in the middle of the card is the Town Hall (Rathaus) constructed around 1556. Below the inscription is the Coat of Arms of the city featuring two lions.
The event took place in June 1939 and was attended by Reichs Minister Joseph Goebbels and Albert Forster, the Gauleiter of Danzig from 1930 until 1945. At the time of the meeting Danzig was still a free city, outside of the German Reich, although you wouldn't know that looking at the image on this postcard.
