700 JAHRE STADT GERA 1237-1937 #2
700th ANNIVERSARY of GERA
(21st/29th Aug 1937)

BACKGROUND: These postcards were published to commemorate two events: The 700th Anniversary of the founding of the City of Gera as well as the 1st Postage Stamp Exhibition of the German Collector's Association in 1937. In addition to an official festival postcard, there were several printed-to-private-order postcards available. The first card (PP122-C-56) has a pre-printed 3Rpf Hindenburg Medallion stamp on the front whereas the second card (PP127-C-33) has a 6Rpf pre-printed Hindenburg Medallion stamp. A third card was available with either a 10Rpf Luftpost pre-printed stamp or with no pre-printed stamp.

OFFICIAL FESTIVAL POSTCARD

This postcard was the offcial festival postcard printed by Druckerei Ernst Günther of the City of Gera. The image is intended to show continuity, with the Nazi's protecting the city in much the same way that the old medieval knights did. The reverse of this example also has a poster stamp or vignette affixed to the front of the card that was made available to commemorate the event. In addition it has also been favour cancelled with the special commemorative cancellation.

K.d.F sponsored postcard PP122-C-56, has a pre-printed 3Rpf Hindenburg Medallion stamp and has an image of the marketplace and City Hall in the city of Gera.

K.d.F sponsored postcard PP127-C-33, has a pre-printed 6Rpf Hindenburg Medallion stamp and has an image of Castle Osterstein.

The following card with a pre-printed 10Rpf Luftpost stamp is a countefeit from the early 1990's. At the time of the orignal cards letterpress printing was the norm, however this one is offset printed. The card was produced on templates issued at the time of the original 3Rpf and 6Rpf cards, but the one with a 10Rpf Luftpost stamp was never used or issued.

Another K.d.F sponsored postcard with an alternative design was available with no pre-printed stamp at all. Like the previous cards this one was also drawn by artist H.A. Ketscher.
