COLONIAL FESTIVE EVENING

BACKGROUND: Published to commemorate the Colonial Festive Evening at the Berlin Zoo on 23rd and 24th Jan 1937. There were four postcards, each with a 5Rpf Hindenburg Medallion pre-printed stamp and each featuring a photograph from either Kamerun, Southwest Africa or East Africa (all former German Colonies).
SPECIAL CANCEL: There was a special cancel available in BERLIN inscribed "BERLIN W62 | KOLONIALFEIERN | vom 23.u. 24.Jan.37 | Zoo Berlin".

The first postcard in the series depicts an African longhouse with wooden logs forming the vertical columns and a thatched roof.

The second postcard depicts two African women wearing traditional costume standing in the bush.

This postcard features an African chieftan wearing a large three pronged headdress kneeling on the ground.

The finanl card in the set shows a Southwest African 'pontok' (an igloo like habitat) with low lying hills in the background.
