ALLGEMEINER DEUTSCHER KATHOLIKENTAG IN WIEN
GENERAL GERMAN CATHOLIC DAY IN VIENNA
(7th/12th Sep 1933)
BACKGROUND: In 1933 approximately 30% of the German population (mostly in the Southern regions) was Catholic, with the remained being Protestant (mostly in the North) or non-alligned. This postcard was published to commemorate Catholic Day (actually 5 consecutive days) from 7th to the 12th Sep 1933 in the Austrian capital of Vienna. One can only imagine what an intense few days this meeting must have been with the Catholic church only two months earlier having signed the Vatican Concordat with the Nazi's, and all the implications that would have had for the local Catholic Church in Germany.
DESIGN: The card depicts a pair of outstretched hands about to grasp a holy cross. The inscription at the top of the card reads "Ein heiliges Jahr der Deutschen" - 'A holy year for the Germans' and the lower inscription reads 'Allgemeiner Deutscher Katholikentag in Wien" - 'General German Catholic Day in Vienna'. The front of the card is inscribed "Offizielle Katholikentags = Postkarte" or 'Official Catholics' Day Postcard' and there is another small inscription which reads "Mascha Prochasta: Werbesymbol des Allg. Deutschen Katholikentags" - 'Mascha Prochasta: Advertising symbol of the General German Catholic Day'.
