BACKGROUND: P173 is a double-sided reply card and it features a 15Rpf stamp of Immanuel Kant. P173 has four lines of sender's text and a three-line vertical divider. The Message (F) side is inscribed "Postkarte mit Antwortkarte | Carte postale avec réponse payée" to the right of the vertical divider. The Answer (A) side is inscribed "Postkarte (Antwort) | Carte postale - réponse" also to the right of the vertical divider.
P173 exists in two variants:
P173-I: With four straight edges.
P173-II: With one or more serrated edges.
In addition to the regular official card described above there were a number of private printings.

There were several private printings of P173.
1. P172(F)/(A): Sender's address on five lines of text "ALA | BERLIN NW 6". At least five versions, each with different text in the sender's section.
2. P172(F)/(A): (F) Reverse side with 12 lines of text including "Verein für Sozialpolitik" and (A) reverse side with seven lines of text ending "Beobachtungsvoll".
