LUDENDORFF-SPENDE FUR KRIEGSBESCHÄDIGTE
LUDENDORFF CHARITY FOR WAR-WOUNDED
(1917?)
BACKGROUND: This series of six charity postcards is undated, but the earliest postally used example I have seen was used in 1917. The cards were sold to raise money for the Ludendorff charity which helped wounded soldiers integrate back into society by teaching them new skills and trades so that they could support themselves.
On the reverse side each card bears the title "Ludendorff-Spende | für Kriegsbeschädigte" - 'Ludendorff donation for those injured in war'. There is another inscription along the central divider which reads "Künstlerpostkarte Nr. 1 von Wilhelm Schulz, München" - 'Artist postcard No. 1 by Wilhelm Schulz, Munich'. The cards are numbered from 1 to 6.
SONDERSTEMPEL:
No. 1
The first card in the series shows a soldier with a missing leg being taught how to farm. Part of the charity's aim was not only to support wounded soldiers but to teach them new skills so that they could help themselves in the future.
No. 2
The second card shows another wounded soldier looking at the tools of his new trade. A farrier perhaps?
No. 3
The third card shows an ex-soldier missing his right arm learning a new trade as a carpenter. The inscription beside the angel reads "Wir alle wollen helfen" - 'We all want to help'. The example below was cancelled on the VISSELHÖVEDE-ROTANBURG train on 22nd Jun 1918
No. 4
The 4th card in the series depicts a wounded soldier being taught a new trade - in this case farming. The feldpost example below-right was postally used on 25th Jun 1918.
No. 5
The 5th postcard, like the 4th, depicts wounded soldiers being taught a new trade - in this case farming again.
No. 6
The 6th and final postcard shows a farmer sowing seed. This feldpost example was postally used in FISCHBACH on 1st Oct 1918, just 6 weeks before the 11th Nov Armistice.
