TAX SURCHARGE
(1st Aug 1916)
BACKGROUND: This postcard was published by Verlag Nölting's Druckerei of Hamburg, and announces the introduction of a 2½ Pfennig tax mid-way through the First World War. The card states that the tax will remain in place until the war's end (11th Nov 1918). The card features Germania pasting over the old 5Pf postal rate with the new 7½Pf rate, and on her arm is a peice of cloth inscribed 7½Pf, ready to be pasted over the other 5Pf.
